Biography

Military

Captain Milton Berry served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Oct 1862
Mustered out: Jul 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 40th Regiment, Missouri Infantry

[citation needed] for the 32nd Infantry

PROOF he served with the 40th Regiment, Missouri Infantry, United States Civil War
and also Captain of the 5th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia [citation needed]
Roll of Honor
Capt. Milton Berry was a Prisoner of War during the United States Civil War.

Included in the 8 pages of fold3 Muster cards is the Court Martial papers for Capt. Milton D. Berry, 5th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia

ARE we sure this Capt. Milton D. Berry is this Milton D. Berry??? His Widow's pension card only lists the 40th Missouri Infantry.
nothing is found for the 32nd Regiment, Missouri Infantry...
Since Milton was older at the time of the Civil War, 60 years, MAYBE his "Captain" status is from one of our previous wars............

Milton's sons military

The Berry boys who served in the 27th were:
  1. Berry, Benjamin D Pri f-a-g 5703861
  2. Berry, Joseph W N Pri f-a-g 132974438
  3. Berry, William M H Pri f-a-g 69604016

Remarks on all 3 cards are the same: "Valuation of horse $75 valuation of horse & equip. $5. Served to Oct. 25, 1861 -- Furnished his horse/eq."

ALSO the 7th Regiment, MO. S.M. Cav- Muster cards for the Berry's are: "William M. Berry, Pvt.age 27 joined feby. 26, 1862 Georgetown, MO" (which IS just days after the 27th MO. Mounted Inf. was disbanded and many of those men joined the 7th MO) These 22 pages tell of William M Berry "Diserted Jan. 18/62, and had a General Court Martial and the charges were REMOVED by order of Proclamation of the President"

No record of Benjamin D. Berry in another MO. Military unit is found maybe he could not get into another unit, on the 1860 census Benjamin is listed as "cripple" so maybe he got away with it in the 27th but not again. Have not found Joseph W. after the breakup of the 27th either.

Further proof of his wife is the Pension files, gives "widow as Anna M. Berry filing as of 8 Nov 1905 so that probably is the date of death, gives service as: B and G of 7th MO. S.M.Cav."

Milton was born in Kentucky circa 1803, and by 1826 he was living in Johnson County, Missouri.

microfilm INDEX: Mount Hope---Cemetery records at the Kansas State Historical Society: lot owner: A.M. Berry -age at death: 82-1-19 late residence: Kansas City, Kansas --funeral director: Penwell interment authorized by A.M. Berry" (above data was found/provided by the Creator: Cheryl White) who has transferred the f-a-g memorial of Joseph to me so I may fill in the Life, Love, family. Thank you Cheryl. First reason: Joseph W. Berry is one of the 701 men who joined the 27th MO. Mounted Inf. as did my g-g-grandfather Morrison M. Lee. Morrison along with 33 others of his Regiment "died of fever, measles, etc'. and were buried in unmarked graves as UNKNOWN SOLDIERS outside the Field Hospitals in the prairie of Sedalia, Pettis Co. MO.". So finding them will be impossible, or so I have been informed by the Military historians of Missouri. Secondly, Joseph W. Berry joined the Regiment on Sept. 23, 1861 in Otterville, MO. just happened to be the same day and place that Benjamin D. Berry joined and also William M. Berry joined.
