Biography

Jonas Gilbert Berry was born on January 22, 1867 in Grapevine, Tarrant Co., Texas, son of Albert Lafayette Berry (1826–1872) and Mary Elizabeth Forest (1832–1908).

Joan (20) married Lydia Henrietta Hudson (19) (born on June 5, 1868 in Arkansas) on August 22, 1887. Their children were:

Joan died on January 25, 1942 in Madison Co., Arkansas, aged 75.

Obituary

Joan Gilbert Berry, former Sheriff of Madison County died Saturday at his home in this city, just two days after he had passed his 75th birthday. He had been ill several months and his death was not unexpected. Funeral services were conducted by Joe Spaulding, Church of Christ pastor at the Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon, 3:00 oclock, and interment was in the Huntsville Cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank Bunch, Elmo Ritchie, Dewey Glass, J. R. Warren, Carl Presley and J. Clark Hawkins, Jr. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Bruce Brashears Undertaking Company.
Mr. Berry was a native of Texas but had resided in Arkansas practically all his life, his parents being among the pioneer settlers of this section of the state. He served as Sheriff longer than any other official in that capacity, being first elected in 1906-1910; appointed 25 July 1914 to serve three months of an unexpired term of M. E. Shuster who resigned to accept U.S. Marshalship; was elected for one term in 1923 and again in 1936-1940 for two terms.
Mr. Berry is survived by his wife and the following children; A. H. Berry of Hindsville, T. E. Berry of Fresno, California, E. H. Berry of Logan, Kansas, Clyde and Lee Berry of Stuttgart, Mrs. W. E. Deaver of Bristow, Oklahoma, Mrs. Alfred Roberts of Springfield, Missouri and Joe Berry of Huntsville. One sister Mrs. John Page of Rogers also survives. All were present at the funeral except the son at Logan, Kansas. Other out of county relatives attending were George Hudson, Mr. and Mrs. John Gorman, and Mrs. Willie Covington of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mrs. Polly Smith and Mr. and Mrs. John Page and daughter Mamie of Rogers.
