JOHN R. BERRY - PVT.

Resided in Orange County,North Carolina. Enlisted at age 19,October 6, 1861. Present and accounted for until captured at Roanoke Island on February 8,1862, paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21,1862. Returned to duty on September 15,1862. Wounded in right hand and shoulder. Captured at Cold Harbor,Virginia, May 31 or June 1,1864. John R. Berry was hospitalized at Washington D.C. on August 16,1864, transferred to Elmira,New York, August 27,1864. Released at Elmira on June 23 1865 after taking the following Oath of Allegiance: "I pledge to uphold the Constitution of the United States and to obey the laws of that union,including all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves."

After being discharged from the army, he rode a train to Rougemont N.C. and walked home about six or seven miles. He arrived home about four a.m. and slept outside on a log or a bench until day light.

John owned a lot of land . His old store house still stands in 1997 across the road from Berry's Grove Babtist Church,John Robert Berry donated the land for the church. John Robert Berry and his wife Bettie sold the tract of land to the Trustees of the Church on April 16 1888 for thirty Dollars probably to cover cost of transfer of property. The church sits near the same spot as the brush arbor where they held services.

Thomas Person Berry sold John Robert Berry one hundred seventeen and one quarter acres of land for one dollar on April 15 1868 recorded in Orange County Deed book 50 page 56

Elizabeth F Bowling was living two dwellings away from James Lunsford, John Roberts uncle in 1850. He most likely knew her all of his life. She was 4 years old in 1850 and he would have been 8.

CONFEDERATE NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS

31st Regiment, North Carolina Infantry

31st Infantry Regiment, organized at Wilmington, North Carolina, in September, 1861, contained men from Anson, Edgecombe, Brunswick, Beaufort, Craven, and Harnett counties. Stationed at Roanoke Island, the unit was captured in February, 1862. After being exchanged, it was assigned to General Clingman's Brigade and remained under his command for the duration of the war. The 31st fought at White Hall, then moved to the Charleston area where it was engaged in various conflicts including the fight at Battery Wagner. Ordered north it took an active part in the battles at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor, and later endured the hardships of the Petersburg siege north and south of the James River. In 1865 it fought its last battle at Bentonville. The unit had 456 effectives at Roanoke Island and lost 7 killed, 31 wounded, and 1 missing defending Battery Wagner on July 18, 1863. Few surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Its commanders were Colonel John V. Jordan; Lieutenant Colonels Daniel G. Fowle, Charles W. Knight, and Edward R. Liles; and Majors John A.D. McKay and Jesse J. Yeates.

John Robert and Betty Berry gave the property to build Berry's Grove Baptist Church on the 16 April,1888
