Biography

James Washington Berry, son of Joel and Elizabeth Cummings Berry, born September 1 1842 and died March 14 1929. [1] He married Elizabeth Jane "Kitty" Squires July 26 1866.[2] "Kitty", daughter of Elijah Hedding Sr and Elizabeth Gibson Squires, born November 25, 1847 in VA and died Jun 20 193l in Braxton County. [3]

James served first in 1st Company, 62nd Battalion Virginia Mounted Infantry and transferred to 2nd Company G in late 1863 as a private. He was captured in "The Battle of the Wilderness". He was sent to Belle Plain, confined at Pt. Lookout 5/17/64 and transferred to Elmira Prison, August 10 1864. On June 23 1865 he took the oath of allegiance and was released. [4]
