:William grew up in the Sardis community, attended the old country school at Sardis, and helped his father on the farm. Will and Bell Berry farmed, raised peaches, cotton, peanut hay, cows, hogs, and at one time operated a grocery store until 1936. When the farm work was done for the spring and summer William, would go to Sugar Land, TX to guard prisoners on the Texas prison system farm. He always came home when it was time to start the crops. He worked until he was 80 years old.
