Biography
Mary (Smith) Beven was born in Bishopwearmouth, County Durham, England.
Mary was born in 1860 in Bishopwearmouth, a village on the outskirts of Sunderland, in County Durham, to Edward Smith, and his wife, Jane Hall.[1][2][3]
She was raised in Bishopwearmouth with both of her parents and at least three siblings; Jane, Edward and William. Her father supported the family as a grocer, and later as a chandler. It would appear that the family lived in relatively reasonable economic circumstances, as they were not frequently moving house and the children were not forced to leave school at a very young age.[4][5][6] As Sunderland expanded outwards in the 19th century, the village of Bishopwearmouth became incorporated into that city.[7] In 1881 Mary and her siblings were enumerated in the census as born in Sunderland, although the family were still living at the same address in Bishopwearmouth as they were ten years earlier.
At 25 years of age Mary married Joseph Charlton Beven in the district of Sunderland, County Durham.[8] The couple had one daughter, Edith, who was born a little over one year after their marriage.[9] The family resided within the Sunderland metropolitan area, where Joseph was a butcher.[10][11]
Mary's sister Jane married and relocated to Erith, Kent, with her husband, Charles, and their children. Mary and Edith visited Jane and her family in Kent during the 1901 census.[12][13]
Mary died in Sunderland in 1906, aged 47 years.[14]
