As an orphan aged 13 years, on 2 April 1688, John Beverley chose his eldest brother, Peter Beverley, as his guardian. John, under the guardianship of his brother, was in England prior to October, 1694, as at that date the executors of Christopher Robinson, executor de bonis non of Maj. John went to Chowan Precinct, NC, where he married Margarett Early, the daughter of William and Elinor Early in Chowan Precinct, NC, between March 27 and July 4,1704, when she witnessed a deed and when her parents, “Will Early and Elener his wife deeded to John Beverly, 100 acres more or less on the north side of Wickacon Creek at the upper side of a Great Branch above the Indian Path to Polley Shores on July 4, 1704.”[citation needed]

What is the documentation that proves the John Beverley who marries Margaret Early is the same John Beverley, son of Robert Beverley and Mary?

All the research I have found says Robert and Mary's son, John, died with no issue. What is the documentation for this statement" "After returning from England, John sold “Beverley Parke” to his brother, Robert."

Beverley-86 and Beverley-162 appear to represent the same person because: Please review the updates to Beverley-162. The profile has been updated with matched data from Ancestry leads as well as the NCHGR (one of which is already on the Beverley-86 profile). Also, according to FindAGrave, the constellation matches: Find A Grave: Memorial #45706456, this John Beverley was the son of Maj. Robert Beverley (ca. 1641-1686) and the brother of Robert Beverley (ca. 1668-1722) and Mary (Beverley) Langhorne (ca. 1678-1796); and, upon inspection of his father's memorial page are shown at least two candidate mothers (the discussion of this John's possible mother on his father's FindAGrave page is interesting).

The FindAGrave memorial does not list this John's wife, but does list these children:

  1. Sarah (Beverley) Cox (b. 1710)
  2. Elijah Beverly (ca. 1762-1835)

and that constellation further aids in sorting out the identity, but may also present some additional duplicates to reconcile.

Thanks, Fann Fann on the US Southern Colonist group - let me know if I may be of further assistance in sorting this out! The person who initiated Beverley-162 had linked him to what is going to be a duplicate spouse. The spousal linkage was instrumental in leveraging the NCHGR transaction where John apparently bought land from his in-laws.

It's possible that a duplicate John has an existing WikiTree profile or that his parents are already present.

Bruce, you are correct. They cared much less than we do about spelling, but they weren't using data bases and search engines. To avoid the Multiple Redirects problem, it is best to agree on a spelling (and stick to it) for the purposes of WikiTree. Not sure what style manual in the G2G you mean. Is it the Naming Conventions page? We do not have a record of John's birth, but we do have record of his father's marriage to Katherine Hone (p 18 The Parish Register of Christ Church ...)

Dear Cynthia (Billups) B--You seem more certain about the spelling than perhaps you ought be. The spelling of words and names was not always as fixed as it is in the 21st century. By way of example: "John Beverley served on the jury ..." and "Deed Book F, p 200: John Beverly, planter, ...". As spelling is often different in authoritative source documents, perhaps the final arbiter could be the spelling "carved in stone" in a grave monument -- but wait -- sometimes these are incorrect, too! You might address input for a style manual in the G2G area for additional feedback. Thanks, again for your help!

Is this is meant to be the son of Maj Robert Beverley and his 2nd wife, Mary (Unknown) Keeble?

The correct spelling is Beverley, so Beverley-86 should be the target profile for all duplicates. Thanks!

Beverley-86 and Beverly-51 appear to represent the same person because: Please consider the merge. LNAB required clarification on the spelling of the two but they appear to be the same person with same spouses, siblings etc.
