Biography

He was born either in Adams County or Baltimore, Maryland. Both are reported. Wherever he entered the world, he was the son of Thomas Wesley & Lydia (Weikert/Weichert) Bittle. In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, but is also in the census living with his parents in Germany Township, Adams County. There is little doubt that he physically resided in Franklin County in 1862. He stood 5' 1" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Chambersburg October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service there November 4 as a private with Co. A, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, at Gettysburg.

He married Catherine B. Sinner ca. 1867 and fathered William (b. @1870), Ellen Barbara (b. 1871 - married Daniel H. Withers), Abba Jane "Abbie" (b. 06/01/74 - married Edward R. Yeager), Thomas Wesley (b. 01/16/77), Aaron Milton (b. 04/07/79), and Margaret M. (b. 1883 - married Edgar Abraham Bair).

In 1870, he lived in Reading Township, Adams County, in 1880, in Hampton Township, and, in 1890, in Steelton, Dauphin County. Spellings of his last name vary. He is in the 1860 Adams County census and on his organizational pension index as "Bittle," but Ancestry.com's index says "Bitler" and the Franklin County census lists "Bidle." He should not be confused with a John Beidel (but often spelled "Biddle" or "Bittle") who also served in the same company and regiment.

The original post that appeared here inaccurately referred to a John W. Biddle who served with the 148th Pennsylvania Infantry.
