Biography

James Henry Billups

Origin

James was born c. 1842 at Scotland County, Missouri, the son of James Billups and Sarah Hayzlett.

Marriage and Children

James married to Fannie Armstrong.[citation needed]

Census Information

The 1850 Census found James H "Belnap" [sic] age 7, living at home with his parents at Johnson, Scotland County, Missouri.[1] His father, James "Bilups" was 57 years old, a farmer who owned 800 acres of real estate, and his mother, Sarah "Bilups" was 46 years old. Both of John's parents were born in Virginia. Also in the household were John's brothers and sisters: John "Bilups" age 25, was a farmer who owned 300 acres of real estate, William "Bilups" 21 also a farmer, and Isham D "Belnap" [sic] 18 a farmer, Disa "Belnap" [sic] 17, and then James H "Belnap" [sic] was the youngest child. All siblings were born in Virginia, except for James H. who was born in Missouri. Note: the name "Belnap" is obviously an error in transcription for Bilups - Billups. The family spans two pages, and the transcriber of the second page interpreted "Bilups" as "Belnap."

Research Notes

MIGHT be the Billups that lived at Brock.

W. E. and J. H. Billups of Brock are the best grain and stock buyers in Northeast Missouri. They are paying 25 cents per bu. for corn. They are feeding 100 head of the finest mules ever fed in this part of the country on the ranch of J. H. Billups.[2]
