Biography

Memoir of Anna Barbara Frey
(From the Moravian Archives , the first burial register of Home Moravian Church.)
Anna Barbara Frey died January 6, 1791 in the evening in the sixth hour, and was buried on the 8th of that month in our God's Acre. She was born June 1, 1722, (Whit Sunday) in Alsace, Germany [now Bas-Rhin, France] and came with her parents to America. In her 17th year she married her first husband, Matthias Meyer, with whom she lived in German town, Pa., and they had two daughters. In the third year of her marriage, she was left a widow. After sometime, she married the present widower Valentine Frey. They were both awakened through the preaching of the Brethren and were members of the County Congregation of Heidelberg, Pa. and partook for the first time of the Holy Communion in 1756. In 1765 they moved to North Carolina and lived on the Yadkin River. They belonged to the County Congregation of Friedberg, N.C. When she became very feeble they transferred their membership to Salem, N.C. in order to be better served by the doctor. At first, she improved, but on the above mentioned day, she fell softly asleep from a stroke.

From her last marriage, she was blessed with 13 children. She lived to see about 100 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Her age was 68 years and 7 months.[1]

Birth: May 17, 1731, Solbach, Alsace, France [2]

Baptism: May 19, 1731, Solbach, Alsace, France [3]

Baptised as Anna Barbel. Sponsors were the daughter of the shepherd at Waldersbach, a single man(blank), and Barbel(blank), a maid at the inn. [4]

Alternate birth: June 1, 1722, Alsace[5]

It is believed that she was the daughter of Johannes Binckele (aka Hans Binggeli), who was baptized 25 Mar 1694 Guggisberg Evangelische Kirche, Kanton Bern, Switzerland [information compiled by researchers in the Binkleys Yahoo group]. Her Moravian memoir (Lebenslauf) does not name her parents, but states that she was born June 1, 1722 in Alsace, and came with her parents to America.

Her first husband was Matthias Meyer or Myer, whom she married in Pennsylvania about 1738. They were the parents of two daughters, Anna Catharina, and Elisabeth. Matthias died in 1741.

  1. Catharina Meyer Zimmerman (1739 - 1808)
  2. Elisabeth Meyer Hauser (1741 - 1814)

Anna Barbara married Johann Valentine Frey on 29 Apr 1742 in Lancaster Co. PA, and moved with him to North Carolina in 1765. They were the parents of 12 children, all born in Pennsylvania.

  3. Anna Maria Frey Feiser (1749 - 1784)

Burial: Salem Moravian God's Acre, Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, USA [7]

Research Notes

There is a conflict between 2 primary sources for her birth. The original church book of Rothau parish records her birth on May 17, 1722 and her baptism on May 19, 1722. Her own Moravian memoir gives her birth date as June 1, 1722.

I have re-checked the church book of Rothau, and the correct birth date for Anna Barbel is May 17, 1722. This is the primary source.

Binkley-285 and Binckele-10 are not ready to be merged because: variances in name, mother
Binkley-285 and Binckele-10 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, but Binkley-285 is linked to the wrong parents. The Johannes Binckele or Binkley who married Barbara Landis is not the same as the one who married Margaretha Wiessenbach.
