Biography of Joseph Birdwell

Joseph Birdwell was born 19 Feb 1767 in Botetourt County, Virginia.[1]

Since Joseph Birdwell was only nine years old in 1776, and only thirteen years old when the historic Battle of King's Mountain was fought on 9 October 1780, it is very unlikely that he took part in the Revolutionary War. Many youths did appear at Sycamore Shoals to volunteer but were sent home to guard the forts and homes. Every eighth man was sent home to act as home guard. However, George Birdwell, Benjamin Birdwell and Robert Birdwell did serve during the Revolutionary War. This family has a strong history of patriotic service.

1779-1780
Joseph Birdwell's father, George Birdwell, sold the homestead in Virginia on March 2, 1779, and on Feb. 22 1780, he entered one hundred acres of land on the north side of the Holston River and later filed for two or more land grants in Sullivan County, North Carolina.
1787
Joseph Birdwell was in the Holston Settlement in 1787 in Sullivan County North Carolina, for he signed the Watauga Petition to North Carolina Legislature (General Assembly) regarding the formation of a new state. This petition was also signed by George and Benjamin Birdwell, Brice Russell Sr. and Jr. and Moses Russel. [2]
1788
Joseph Birdwell married Rachel Russell 1788, Sullivan County, North Carolina, later Tennessee. Rachael Russell was born before 1757 and died 24 Sep 1824.(She is named in Hugh Thompson's will. Rachel Russell Birdwell married 2nd to Lewis Hill in Knox County, Tennessee, on 18 July 1803. (Marriage Book 1 1792-1837, p. 33)
1793
27 July 1793 took out Land Grant No. 460 for 200 acres on the West Fork of Rockey Spring in Hawkins Co. which Joins Sullivan County, North Carolina[3]
1795
In July of 1795, the name of Joseph Birdwell appears as serving on the jury, and on ten other occasions it appears in like fashion. There are records on the Tax Books of Knox County where he paid state and county tax.
1801
Joseph Birdwell died 1 Aug 1801, intestate in Knox County, Tennessee. He was but 34 years of age.
1807
After Joseph Birdwell died in 1801 the Knox County Will Book 1792-1821, page 71 in July 1807 showed Andrew Russell and James Russell appointed by the Court as Guardians for Mary, Betsy, Sally, George, Rachel, Jenny and Russell Birdwell as minor orphans, whereupon the said Andrew and James Russell entered into bond with P. M. Miller and Thomas Dendis their securities in the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, condition for the faithful discharge of said Guardianship.[4]
