Biography

THOMAS BISHOP of Ipswich, Mass., was a merchant and deputy to the General Court May and Sept. 1666. The will of Rev. Thomas Cobbet of Ipswich in 1685 made reference to him as "godly wise merchant Bishop,"' and also as "prudent & pious." He is a qualifying ancestor of The Society of Colonial Wars. Thomas Bishop was licensed to sell strong liquors in 1666, 1667, 1668, 1669, and 1670. At his death left, for those days, the very large estate of £5000. Thomas Bishop arrived at Ipswich by 1637[1] He was born c1618 [He deposed Sept. 1670. aged about 52 years]. and died 7 Feb 1670/1 in Ipswich. He married Margaret (Unknown). Children

  1. Samuel Bishop, born 1644-5; Harvard College 1665; died in 1687. Lived in Ipswich. He married Hest Coggsell 10 Aug 1675 and died in 168[6?] She m/2 Thomas Burnham 16:10:168[6?].
  2. John Bishop, removed to Wethersfield, Conn., prior to 1675 and died there October 1678, leaving an only daughter Sarah and a widow Sarah.
  3. Thomas Bishop, merchant, born 1646, a merchant, trading to the West Indies. Lived in Ipswich in 1681 and then was "late of the parish of Snt Michaell in the Isle of Barbados." in 1684 he bought 850 acres on the Merrimack River.
  4. Job Bishop,mariner, born about 1653; in 1691, he having been absent at sea three years, his widow Johanna was granted administration on his estate. Johanna's letter included in his probate records is of interest.
  5. Nathanial Bishop, died, a minor, 10 May 1673.

Will

He died 7 February 1670/1, leaving a widow Margaret, a brother Paul Bishop of Kingston (England) named in his will, a "cousin" Sarah Bishop who lived with him, and who was probably a niece, and sons Samuel, John, Thomas, Job, Nathaniel. The widow Margaret died probably in 1680, as an inventory of her estate was presented in Court 31 March 1681. Job Bishop of Ipswich, a brother of Thomas, married Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. George Phillips. Thomas was Job's surety in 1658.

The will of Thomas Bishop, Sr of Ipswich, dated 6 Feb. 1670/1 (administration granted 16 Feb 1670/ 1), gave to his wife Margaret half of his dwelling house for life, and most of his furniture; three eldest sons, apparently the ones afterwards named as Samuel, John and Thomas: to Job and Nathanael, his two youngest sons; "to my cousin Sarah Bishopp yt now lives wth mee," £15 and a cow at marriage, and £15 two years after; "to my brother Paul Bishopp of Kingston," a hogshead of tobacco, to be sent over to him of the first that come to me from Virginia; son Samuel after my wife's decease is to enjoy the house where l now dwell, with that wherein John Sparks dwells; John and Thomas to enjoy the farm, and youngest sons Job and Nathanaell to have an equal share with them when they come to the age of 21. The widow Margaret was granted administration. The estate was large, including a dwelling house, land, two barns, etc., £150; a house with orchard and pasture, £50; a farm of 80 acres with house and buildings, a barn and 20 acres more, £650; other lands; merchandise; a quarter part of the Ketch Margaret, and part of the cargo, £80; and an interest in other boats. The whole estate in realty and livestock came to £1222; household goods 10 £224; vessels and cargoes to £686; debts, £2818; total, £5000.1.10, out of which over £961 was owing. Administration on the estate of Mrs. Margnret Bishop was granted, 29 Mar. 1681, to " her son Samuell Bishop." Her estate was appraised as worth £710.
