Biography

Althea Bishop was born 22 June 1891 in Morris, Grundy County, Illinois to William Lawson Barnett and Althea Frances Bishop Barnett. Four months after her birth, according to the town newspaper, her father murdered her mother in a drunken rage. Althea and her sister Genevieve were raised by her widowed maternal grandmother Mary Louisa Newport Bishop.

Althea married Richardson Saunders in Lake County, Florida in 1927. In 1933, she accompanied her husband to Washington, DC when he assumed the position of Assistant to the Secretary of Labor (Frances Perkins) in the Roosevelt Administration.

She died in 1982 in Alexandria, Virginia and is buried at Rock Creek Cemetery with Richardson Saunders.
