Biography

Mary was born in December 1870 in Georgia.[1]

In the 1900 U. S. Census (7 June 1900) [1] the family was living in Precinct 12, Bacon Level, Randolph County, Alabama. Her husband Joseph was a thirty-four year old farmer. Mary (Mary A.) was twenty-nine years old. They had been married thirteen years which would make the marriage about 1887. She was the mother of five living children. A sixth child had died prior to the census. The children were all living at home. They were: Walter age 11 born February 1889; Mary L. age 7 born January 1893; Annie R. age 5 born March 1895; Joseph H. age 3 born May 1897 and Robert E. age 1 born March 1899. There was also a twenty two year old boarder, John C. Hudson, who was a miller in a grist mill.

In the 1910 U. S. Census (April 24, 1910) [2] the family was in Precinct 12, Randolph County, Alabama. Joseph was doing general farming on a rented farm. They were shown as being married 22 years which would place the year of the marriage about 1888. Mary Alice (Enumerated Allice [2] was shown as the mother of ten children with nine living in 1910. The children at home were: Lena age 17, Annie Kay age 15, Howard age 12, Elmer age 11, Vivian age 6, Elizabeth age 5, Agness age 4, and Sarah age 1. Both Joseph and Mary Alice could read and write. All of the children were born in Alabama. All of the older children attended school and helped on the farm.

Joseph B. Bishop passed away in 1912 leaving Mary Elizabeth a widow with nine children, several of whom were still young.[3]

In the 1920 U. S. Census (January 10, 1920) [4] Alice Bishop was living in a rented home at 11 First Avenue in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia. She was head of the household and forty-nine years old. No employment was listed for her. There were three children in the household and the older two were working as spinners in the cotton mill. The children at home were Vivian age seventeen, Elizabeth age sixteen and Sarah who was ten and attending school.

In the 1930 U. S. Census (3 April 1930) [5] Mary and Vivian Bishop were still living at 1201Third Avenue in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia. The home was rented for $2 a month. It was probably part of the "mill village" which was housing owned by the mill and rented to its workers. This one was a duplex with two households in the dwelling. Mary was fifty-nine years old and had no occupation. Her daughter Vivian was listed as twenty-five years old and still working as a spinner in the cotton mill.

In the City Directory for Greenville, South Carolina, Vivian was working for Brandon Mills in Greenville. Although Mary Alice was not listed, I think she was probably there with Vivian. She was not likely listed because she was not employed. [6]

In the 1940 U. S. Census (8 April 1940) [7] Mary A. Bishop was enumerated as the mother-in-law of Fredeck (Fredrick?) O. Taylor and his wife Vivian. They lived in the village of Brandon, Greenville Township, Greenville County, South Carolina at 4 Green Street. The home was rented for $5 a month. Fredeck was a thirty-eight year old loom fixer at a cotton mill and had earned $950 in the prior year. He was a widower with three children: Joe E. age 11, Charles F. age 8, and Madolyn F. age four months. Fredeck and the four children were listed as living in the same location in South Carolina in 1935. Vivian was indicated as living in Alabama (probably incorrect) and Mary A. as living in LaGrange in 1935. It appears likely that Vivian and Fredeck had been married after the birth of his youngest daughter and probable death of his first wife within the prior four months.

Research Notes

Uncertain Parents and Death information

It is possible that there are two Mary Alice / Joseph Bishop couples that have been combined or confused on various family trees.

Many trees have this Mary Alice as the daughter of John Romaldus Bennett and Mary Angeline Meacham Bennett. They had a daughter Mary Alice Sentell Bennett born 19 December 1870 which would be consistent with our Mary Alice.

In the 1880 U. S. Census the Bennett family had a daughter age ten consistent with this Mary Alice but indicates she was born in Alabama while other records show her born in Georgia.

The headstone connected to Joseph Wheeler Bishop was born 12 February 1886. The one that is linked to the Mary Alice in this profile was consistently shown as born in about 1866 and if there is a middle initial it is "B". To complicate it even more, the profile on FAG has the obit that uses Joseph B. Bishop and fits this Mary Alice and her family. This leads me to think the name and date on the FAG profile may be wrong on the headstone.[8]

The FamilySearch death record for Joseph Walter Bishop - Joseph Wheeler Bishop and Mary Alice Bennett [9]

Her death place is uncertain. In 1940 she was in Greenville, SC with the family of her daughter, Vivian. She was reportedly buried in Randolph County, Alabama.
