Research Notes

A FamilySearch.org family tree gives John's parents as Robert Bishop and Rachael Wise, married 08 Aug 1764 in Wiltshire. It also gives his grandfather as Benjamin Bishop, and his siblings as Robert, Vince, George, and William.

There are multiple couples named John and Sarah Bishop listed as parents for children born in Wiltshire in the late 1700s and early 1800s. In the "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," accessed from FamilySearch.org, the following christenings are in Potterne, Wiltshire and list the mother's name as Sarah Leonora:

  • William 18 APR 1791
  • Elizabeth 23 DEC 1792
  • John 03 APR 1796
  • Lucy 20 May 1798
  • Ann 07 Jul 1805
  • Henry 31 AUG 1806
  • Jane Harriot 17 APR 1808
  • Vince 21 JAN 1810
  • Frederick 23 FEB 1812
  • Augusta 17 JUL 1814

(Other WikiTree entries associate many of the above children with John Bishop-5642 (born 1738) and Sarah Lenora Whitemarsh-4 (born 1741), but they seem to be too old to be the parents of at least some of the above children.)

Also in "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", the following christenings/baptisms are at Saint James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire and list the mother's name as only Sarah:

  • Susannah 09 Aug 1806 and 17 Aug 1806
  • William 25 Dec 1811
  • Sarah 25 Dec 1811
  • James 25 DEC 1811
  • Elizabeth 25 DEC 1811
  • Joseph 02 Jun 1816
  • Susanna 11 Apr 1819
  • Maria 07 Apr 1822
  • William 03 Apr 1825

Again from the same source, the following christenings are at Hingdon, Wiltshire and list the mother's name as only Sarah:

  • John 25 DEC 1762

Still from the same source, the following christenings are at St. Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire and list the mother's name as only Sarah:

  • John 06 AUG 1809

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
