The birthdate and death dates are uncertain because no primary sources have been found yet. The birthplace is uncertain as Tallapoosa, County. The family lived in Chambers County in most records, but the two counties share a border that may have varied at times. I have also found no documentation of him in Mississippi. The death or divorces from his wives are undocumented also. The Find A Grave memorial for Martha Fetner indicates that she was divorced from Thomas Bishop and remarried William Irwin. I have found no information about Thomas after the 1900 Census record.
Ira was reportedly born on 11 October 1852 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He was the son of Benjamin Bishop and Elizabeth Quattlebaum Bishop.
In the 1860 U. S. Census [1] taken on August 22, 1860, his father's (Benjamin) real estate value was $1000 and his personal estate was valued at $200. The family included Sarah A. (age 16), James W. (age 14), John J. (age 12), Benjamin H. (age 10), Ira T. (age 8), Mary E. (age 6), George A. (age 3) and Babe (age 3 months). All of the older children were attending school.
In the 1866 Alabama Census [2] the family still lived in Chambers County, Alabama. There were three sons between ten and twenty years old. Ira would have been about fourteen years old.
In the 1870 U. S. Census [3] taken on July 2, 1870, the post office was listed as Milltown. Benjamin’s real estate was valued at $800 and his personal estate was valued at $500. The children remaining at home were Sarah, Mary, George, Matilda and Francis. George was listed as a farm hand and it does not indicate that any of the children attended school.
In the 1870 U. S. Census [4] taken on July 1, 1870, the post office was listed as Milltown. Ira was enumerated as "Thomas" Bishop a farm laborer on the farm of his brother William J. Bishop who was married with one child. Their brothers John and Henry were also on farm laborers on the same farm. Their parents were enumerated in the same area the next day and several of the younger children were listed in both census records.
He married Martha E. Hickey December 2, 1877 In Chambers County, Alabama. [5]
In the 1880 U. S. Census (10 June 1880), [6] Ira Thomas was listed as "Thom Bishop". He was twenty-eight years old and farming. He and Martha had one son, Earnest age 1879.
Ira Thomas and Martha had one additional child, a daughter Myrtle Elizabeth Bishop, born in about 1881. Apparently Martha Hickey Bishop died, although I have found no documentation. Thomas married Martha Aldora Fetner November 3, 1895 in Chambers County, Alabama.[7]
In the 1900 U. S. Census (25 June 1900), Thomas and Aldora lived in a rented home in Milltown, Chambers County, Alabama. Myrtle was eighteen years old. Thomas and Aldora had three young children: Leah age 3, Bruce age 2 and Henderson age nine months.
