Biography

MIlton Wilcox Bishop, son of Clarence Long Bishop and Edna Helen (Biddle) Bishop, was born 21 Aug 1900, in Bluff Point, Jerusalem , Yates Co., New York.[1]

Milton, usually called "Milt" grew up with his parents in Corning, New York.[2] He was an early Boy Scout and remained active in the Boy Scouts for about 30 years.[3]

Milton was confirmed 11 April 1916, in the Episcopal denomination Christ Church in Corning, New York[4]

Milt served in World War I. He enlisted as a private, 12 Jan 1918, at Elmira. It seems he exagerated his age on his enlistment papers, stating his birthdate as 21 Aug 1899, making him 18 years 5 months and six days, instead of 17 years old born in 1900.[5] Milton W. Bishop spent two months in the Second Recruit Company, General Service Infantry, at Fort Slocum, New York,[6] before being transfered to the Balloon Corps. He was listed as a private on the muster roll (Feb 28, 1918 to April 30, 1918) 4th Balloon Squadron, Morrison, Virginia. Remarks state he was transferred from the 28th balloon Company April 4, 1918. The entry mistakenly says he enlisted Jan 12, 1917.[7] He was part of the 10th Balloon Corps, in the St. Mihiel and Toul sectors in France.[8] He was honorably discharged 4 June 1919 at Camp Upton in New York.[9][5][10] Milton would later be an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as commander of Avon Park, Florida Barracks #1150.[3]

After the war, Milton became an accountant and manager in Elmira, first with Morris & Co., then Armour & Co., and after World War II with Moore Business Forms. [3]

Milton Wilcox Bishop, usually called "Milt" and Florence Elizabeth Crofutt were married 5 June 1920 in Elmira, Chemung Co., New York, at Trinity Church by Rev. Henry Hubbard.[11][12]

A family story: On a wedding anniversary, about five years after their marriage, Milt and Flo, were having dinner with friends and Rev. Hubbard. Discussing the anniversary, their young son, Robert, piped up and said "My parents were married on the same day I was born" This of course might cause "red cheeks" for any god-fearing couple. Fortunately Rev. Hubbard piped up and said "I rememeber that. You were born on the same day exactly one year after they married."

Milt and Flo retired in 1962 and moved Avon Park, Florida, where they continued to be involved in the church and community.[3]

Milton died in Avon Park, Highlands Co., Florida, 1 May 1988,[13] shortly after his wife died 23 March. He was buried 4 May 1988, at Lakeview Memoria Gardensl, Avon Park.[14]

MIlton and Florence had three children, one died at age 10 days. They also adopted and raised a grand-daughter.[15]

  1. Child: Robert Milton Bishop.
  2. Child: Philip Lavergne Bishop.
  3. Child: Mary Louise Bishop.
