Biography

The book "Descendants of John Bishop ..." notes that it was very difficult to find much about Thalmeno's family, although they did interview a great granddaughter, Louise Bishop (dau of Willard, who was a son of Justin). Both that book and the Putnam source say that he removed to NY, and the Thalmy of the 1810 may be Thalmeno. He was baptized on 23 October 1757 in Durham, CT.

Newspaper advertisements in American Citiezen, New York City and Albana Register in October, November, December 1808 placed by Abigail Bishop show that Nathaniel late of Hamden, CT, left 600 acres of the township of Brutus, Cayuga Coutny, to his 8 children, Thalmeno, Leonard, William George, Roxcy [Roxanna], Sevilla Coe, Silvia Scoville, and the petitioner Abigail. It asks the court to divide the land equally and grant title to all eight children. Petition to the court of Cayuga County submitted Septembe 26, 1808, by Abigail of the Town of Marcellus , Onondaga Co.

It was not possible to directly verify that Thalmeno is the father of Samuel Samuel. I made a comprehensive search of all the Samuel Bishops in CT, and the nearest fit was that Samuel. The date October 9, 1784, given in DJB and other places cannot be correct since there is another son, Justin, of Thalmeno born only 4 months after that date. If we accept that the census dates and that in his obituary (age 76 in June 1860, and died at age 78 in November 1861), then bishop-7328 must have been born between June and November 1783.

Both Thalmeno and the father of Samuel's wife, Tillabee Bathrick are listed in the Franklin, Co, MA, area of Hampshire Co in the 1800 census. Soon thereafter Tillabee moved to Cayuga Co, NY, where in 1803, Samuel married Esther Bathrick. Thalmeno's son Justin was married in Colrain, MA, in 1808 and stayed in that town of Franklin Co until he moved on to St Lawrence, Co, NY.

I now have yDNA verification that I descended from the Grandfather of Thalmeno, [[bishop-7383|James Bishop. My yDNA matches that of Alfred Chilton Bishop, Jr., who is also a descended from that James Bishop. Alfred Chilton Bishop, Jr.'s Father Alfred Chilton Bishop, Sr., is found on Find-a-Grave and Geni.com.

Thalmeno had 4 more children for which there is only a birthday supplied by the Barbour collection and derivative sources: Mary, b 18 Jan 1780 in Guilford; the other 3 were born in Killinworth, CT: Mariah, b 13 Sep 1786; Achsah, b 29 May 1788; Lois, b 18 Nov 1790.
