Notes

  • 28 December 1646, Edward Bishop was granted 40 acres of land near Bass River. This is the section of Salem which would later be set off as the town of Beverly, Massachusetts. [10]

Common Errors to Avoid

  • Merge caution: There were up to 4 Edward Bishops living at the same time in the Salem area. Most importantly, he is not the same as Edward Bishop, sawyer who married the famed accused witch Bridget Bishop.
  • Incorrect parents: Edward Bishop is sometimes said to be the son Thomas Bishop and Avis Abbott of Kingston, Surrey, England. [11] There is absolutely no evidence to support this.
  • Second wife: It is commonly found that Bridget Bishop, the first woman hanged as a witch in Salem, was the second wife of Edward Bishop of Salem and Beverly. This has been shown to be incorrect. [12] [13]
There were up to 4 Edward Bishops living at the same time in the Salem area in the mid to late 17th century, which has led to a great deal of confusion. The witch Bridget Bishop was not married to this Edward Bishop Sr. She was married to another called for convenience and in the primary records Edward Bishop, sawyer. This was determined by closely examining the Salem records and the witch trial records. The most obvious evidence is that it can be shown that Edward Bishop Sr. was still married to his wife Hannah in 1692; while Bridget had married Edward Bishop the sawyer probably in 1680 and certainly by 1687.
  • Incorrect wife: He is sometimes said have been the Edward Bishop who married Elizabeth (Lambert) Cash, widow of William Cash, on 9 March 1692/3 in Salem. Though not completely impossible, it is more likely this represents the re-marriage of Edward Bishop the sawyer who became a widower when his wife was hung for witchcraft on 10 June 1692. [14]

Corrections/additions made: (1) The statement Edward dying before 1715 and its source were removed; a better source and date of d. remains. (2) Salem Village, later renamed Danvers, was not where Edward Bishop Sr. resided. (3) Edward Bishop Jr.’s wife's maiden name is spelled Wildes on Junior’s profile, an alternate spelling added here for Wild.

David, fabpedigree.com is absolutely not an adequate source. The error rate of this site is so high that it can never be used as a source but only as a rough guide.

The following source indicates that Edward was born in Surrey, England in 1621 the son of Thomas and Avis Abbot Bishop. Do the profile managers think this is enough evidence to change the birth date and place and death date and to add Thomas Bishop as father? http://fabpedigree.com/s014/f630607.htm

Edward would be my 9th great-grandfather and Thomas my 10th.

Edward Bishop could have been born in Salem in 1620, as the English had no presence there until 1626.

Bishop-1488 and Bishop-984 appear to represent the same person because: Dates, place and relationships match. For date of death, I am adding a source for the Salem death record in 1695.
