Biography

Gideon was born on 27 August 1772 in Steele's Tavern, Augusta, Virginia. He was the son of Robert Blackburn and Margaret Sarah (Ritchie) Blackburn.[1]

When Gideon was 21 he married Grizelle Blackburn on 3 October 1793 in Dandridge, Jefferson. Tennessee. STA @N773@[2][3] In 1793 Blackburn married a niece, Grizzel Blackburn, with whom he had seven daughters and four sons.'

In 1803 Gideon (age about 30) was employed. Note: Undertook a mission to the Cherokee.[4]

In 1811 Gideon (age about 38) was employed. Note: Principal of Harpeth Academy.[4]

In 1823 Gideon (age about 50) was employed in Louisville, Kentucky. Note: preached.[4]

In 1827 Gideon (age about 54) was employed as a Preacher.[4]

In 1827 Gideon (age about 54) was employed in Louisville, Kentucky. Note: President of Center College.[4]

Gideon died at the age of 65 on 23 August 1838 in Carlinville, MacOupin, Illinoise.[2]

Gideon was buried after 23 August 1838 in Carlinville, College, Illinois.[3]

Research Notes

Founded the Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill. While getting a secondary education, he tended a sawmill at night and studied Latin verbs by pine torch. he did surveying for early settlers and took his pay in horses which he sold in Knoxville, Tennessee. He used that money to attend Dickinson college in pennsylvania.
He founded the Indian schools, settlement schools and churches, and founded the Blackburn college in Carlinville, Illinois.
He freed his slaves before heading west, and hired two as servants.[5]
