I knew Angela Maude Madden, as (Great) Auntie Maude, my Poppy Blacklow's sister. My Auntie Maude was quick, passionate and articulate. When Maudie entered the room her eyes would deeply look into each person in the room with a smile. The smile could mean both I like/love you and/or I'm ready for a passionate discussion/debate. Sometimes it was about the little things in life, like football and cricket, but more often it was explaining and fighting the injustice and inequality that exists in the world.
Auntie Maude was hired as a nurse by one of the first union of workers on the West Coast of Tasmania. She was a member of the Labour Party of Australia for many years and awarded life membership. Rather than receiving the award from the current Australian PM, Paul Keating, Auntie Maude shunned the invitation (Keating was way too "new" ALP) and instead received it from Michael Field leader of the opposition in Tasmania.
At an Economic Society of Australia AGM, I asked Michael Field if he knew or recalled Maude Madden. He replied "You don't mean Mad Maude Madden do you? She used to ring me up every week with some fight for justice".
