Biography

Ephraim was born in about 1742 at Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He is the son of Joseph Blackman and Unknown Mother.

Ephraim marries to Orpha Church in York Township, Lower Canada (present day Toronto, Ontario). Orpha was born in 1763 at Sheffield, Berkshire, Massachusetts. She is the daughter of Samuel Church and Rhoda Bush.

According to a Land Petition of 1819 in Upper Canada, Ephraim states he was "born in the United States and came to live in Lower Canada in 1795." Land Grants in Canada were given to soldiers who fought in the War of Independance and the War of 1812. Ephraim submitted four applications for grants of land in Canada.

Ephaim enlisted in the War of 1812 under Capts. Gideon Brownson and Parmalee. He then enlisted under Cols. Ethan Allen and Samuel Herrick. He fought as a member of "Green Mountain Boys," a militia organization first established in the late 1760s in the territory between the British provinces of New York and New Hampshire, known as the New Hampshire Grants (which later became the state of Vermont). Headed by Ethan Allen and members of his extended family, they were instrumental in resisting New York's attempts to control the territory, over which it had won de jure control in a territorial dispute with New Hampshire.

Three of Ephraim's sons fought in the War of 1812, two of them, Henry and Philo were members of the "Glengarry Light Infantry," in Canada.

Ephriam Blackman dies on March 18, 1833 at Streetsville, Upper Canada (Ontario). Orpha dies February 15, 1835 at Streetsville.

Gideon marries second to Amy Brooks on March 28, 1814 in the Seigourney Argenteuil, District of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Gideon died on October 28, 1847 at Buffalo, Scott, Iowa, United States. Goodrich, A Member of the Vermont Historical Society, Rutland, Vermont: The Tuttle Company, 1904, 831, 832: "The fact that the 'Green Mountain Boys' were at Quebec in 1776; that two of the officers on these rolls - Captain and Commissary Elijah Babcock, and Capt. Robert Cochran are identified in name and rank with those on a list handed to the Provincial Congress of New York by Ethan Allen and Seth Warner, on July 4, 1775, as officers of the Green Mountain Boys; and the further fact that none of the men are recorded in any other place, or with any other organization, all confirm the belief that the soldiers on its rolls herewith were a part of that historic band." Enlisted men. "Epheram Blackmon."
