Biography

Beatrice's birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1888 in the Cuckfield Union district.^[1]

Beatrice, daughter of Richard John Blackman and Ellen, was baptised on 13 May 1888 in Sussex, England.^[2]

In the 1891 census Beatrice (age 3) was the granddaughter of Caroline Knight in Sussex, England.^[3]

In the 1901 census Beatrice (age 13) was the daughter of Richard J Blackman in Haywards Heath, Sussex, England.^[4]

In the 1911 census Beatrice (age 23), Dressmaker, was the single daughter of Richard J Blackman in Haywards Heath, Sussex, England.^[5]

In the 1939 register Beatrice (age 51), Dressmaker, was recorded as single in Cuckfield, Sussex, England.^[6]

Beatrice died on 10 October 1969 in Sussex and her estate passed probate on 12 January 1970 in Brighton.^[7]

Beat lived at 108 New England, Haywards Heath, in the back garden there was a shed/room, as I remember, clad in corrigated iron sheets, my memory suggests it was a dirty crimson, which was always called the Work Room. It was the place where Beat and Jess had worked as dress makers.

The pictures of Lily's wedding party, were taken in the back yard of '108'.

My memories of '108' are of Victorian/Edwardian formailty, I'm told I learned to walk by holding on to the desk top supports of the bureau in the main living room. I'm not sure I ever remember the front room being used. I certainly have the idea that it was kept for 'Best', but when I was around there were never any occasions which warranted its use.
