Biography

Peter Blackmer was a son of William Blackmer and Elizabeth (Banks) Blackmer, born in Scituate, Massachusetts, on 25 May 1667.[1][2] He was not yet 9 years old when his father died.

His first wife was Elizabeth, whose last name is not known. Their marriage is not recorded; they are assumed to have married by 1690, as their first child was born on 25 September 1690.[3] Elizabeth died in Rochester, Massachusetts, on 13 May 1711, in her 38th year.[4]

By a deed dated and acknowledged on 6 January 1692/3, Peter Blackmer of Rochester, a carpenter, sold to Peter Collamer of Scituate a certain tract of "two or three acres of swampland Granted to my father William Blackmore deceased." The price paid for the land was 15 shillings.[5]

In 1698, Peter is mentioned in his brother, William's will. William leaves a legacy to Peter's children, Joseph and Jane. William also mentions his other siblings, John Blackmer, and Phebe Holmes, wife of Ebenezer Holmes, and also his mother but not by name.[6]

He married Sarah Edwards on 24 October 1711.[2]

Lt. Peter Blackmer died on 17 April 1717 in Rochester, Massachusetts.[2][4]

His will is dated 10 April 1717 and proved on 24 April 1717 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Sarah, and his children, Samuel, John, Joseph, William, Peter, Stephen, Elizabeth (per his will, her uncle William called her Jane), Jemimah, and Mary. His moveables inventory was taken on 29 April 1717 in Rochester and recorded at Plymouth.[7]

Conflicting Information

  • Deane's History of Scituate indicates that Peter Blackmore died in 1692, survived by children Joseph and Jane.[8] This is inconsistent with other information, including the January 1692/3 deed in which Peter Blackmer of Rochester referred to William Blackmore as his father.

Blackmore-53 and Blackmer-25 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death data, same wives. Blackmer and Blackmore are variant spellings of the same name. I believe that BLACKMER is the appropriate spelling for his LNAB because that is the spelling that appears in the vital records entry for his birth that is cited in Blackmer-25.
