Biography

Robert and his brother James are listed in the vestry book of St. Paul’s Parish as active members and leaders of the church.[1] James is found listed in the vestry book of St. Paul’s Parish in the years 1699 and 1701, also listed are the births of four of his children, more may have been listed but because of the deteriorated condition of this book much of the “B’s” are unreadable, only these four are known for certain. Also found in the surviving information is the death of his youngest child and the marriage of his oldest son along with his wife’s given name Lydia, [surname believed, to be Turner].

James Blackwell, was the son of Robert Blackwell. He was born in 1647 in York County, Virginia and died in 1717 in New Kent County, Virginia. James married Lydia Turner who was born in England in 1650 The Vestry Book of St. Paul's Parish names four children born to James and Lydia. They are:

  1. Lydia Blackwell born 1684 in New Kent County, Virginia.
  2. Lucie Blackwell born 27 September 1685 in New Kent County, Virginia.
  3. John Blackwell born 1686 in New Kent County, Virginia.
  4. Mary Blackwell born 24 December 1687 and died 20 Feb 1688.
Other researchers list three other children. Their names are as follows:
  1. Sarah Eudora Blackwell born 1674 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.
  2. James Blackwell born 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia.
  3. William Blackwell born 1682 in New Kent County, Virginia.

At the December 1717 vestry meeting, Robert Blackwell, James older brother was elected to the vestry in the place of James who is described as being “ lately deceased”.

James was buried in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia.[2][3]

Research Notes

Signer of the 1677 Blisland Complaint

One of the residents of Blisland Parish who signed the 1677 "Blisland Complaint" was named James Blackwell[4] - probably this James Blackwell, whose profile says he was born 1647 in York and died in New Kent, 1717.
Blisland Parish served New Kent County from its formation in 1654 and had served York County prior to that (from which New Kent County was formed).[5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

To prove any shared ancestor this far back DNA matches will not work. There must be yDNA results or atDNA triangulations found and the latter will be difficult without many prospective matches.

Good day. My name is Jennifer Harris Wolff. I am a direct descendant of Robert Blackwell. James Blackwell, husband of Lydia Turner, was my 8th great-grandfather. I share 11 segments with Mr. Ron McKinney. My GEDmatch number is BJ5454014. I am part Wicocomico and Powhatan. My grandfather Woodrow Harris and his twin, Tedrowe Harris, grew up on a reservation in Oklahoma. I have many Cherokee cousins who are on the Dawe's rolls.
I’m a direct descendant of him also

Good day, Wanda. Do you perhaps have a GEDmatch number or a family tree on a website? I will personal message you.
Please change the “Confirmed with DNA” relationship with parents to “Confident”. WikiTree requires “Confirmed with DNA” back this many generations to use a triangulated group (at least 3 distant cousins) all matching each other on an autosomal segment of at least 7 cM. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Triangulation

Please remove the Croshaw daughter until substantiation can be provided. This is an unproven ancestor to me. Sarah Blackwell to John Ussery is recorded. Then it relies upon no evidence whatsoever.

I still cannot see whatever document/photo is under the heading "Blackwell Genealogy".
This profile needs extensive work. The documented children of James Blackwell are listed in his biography. This can easily be verified. Yet there are many more children entered above. There are even one or more duplicate profiles which should be merged. There are three profile managers here. I'm sure between the three of them they probably have sufficient sources to clarify this profile.
The website referred to as Blackwell Generation under Sources still does not function. I looked for the attachment to explain as suggested but could not find it either. It really should be repaired or removed.

Thank you.

Note: various birth dates and death dates are reported for this woman. However, all seem to agree she was first married to Robert Blackwell and later to John West.

Notes for Ursula Unity (Croshaw) Crenshaw: Emily Calloway Stillman's research is heavily documented and she identifies the Croshaw daughter that married Robert Blackwell as a daughter by his first wife but does not name her.

The following is from "The Blackwells of Blackwell's Neck" by June Banks Evans:

"The marriage of a Croshaw daughter to Robert Blackwell has been questioned. However, the Blackwell land was located next to some of the New Kent County land of John West, who owned the large tract in the fork between the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers at the head of the York River - the West Plantation. (PB3:93, 291). West's son John, who was eighteen years old when his father died in 1659, later married Unity Croshaw, daughter of Major Croshaw of York County (Harris, Old New Kent County: 567) It is not unreasonable to suggest that John West married the widow of Robert Blackwell (who died before November 1664) and became guardian for her young children, which would account for the deed of gift to Croshaw's Blackwell grandsons. After the death of Croshaw, his daughter Unity and her husband John West eventually held title to all of his estate lands."

Emily Calloway Stillman makes a valid observation that Unity would have been listed as Unity Blackwell at the time that she married John West had she previously been married to Robert Blackwell.

More About Ursula Unity (Croshaw) Crenshaw and Robert Blackwell: Marriage: Between 1645 - 1646, Virginia. Children of Ursula Unity (Croshaw) Crenshaw and Robert Blackwell are:

Robert Blackwell Jr 1645 York VA – 1718 York VA, 1st married Ann Unknown (1642 VA - 1676 VA) in 1665, 2nd Mary Manning (1660 after 1718 VA) in 1676 James Blackwell, b. 1647, St. Peter's Parish, York, New Kent, Virginia, d. September 19, 1717, Lunenburg, Virginia, married Lydia Turner (1650 VA) Joseph Blackwell (1649 York VA; d: before 1688 VA

[Unity Croshaw] is perhaps most notable as the reportedly shrewish wife of Colonel John West, son of Virginia Governor John West, who divorced him for adultery when he left her to live with Cockacoeske who was the queen of the Pamunkey Indians and a cousin of Pocahontas. (According to Wikipedia)

Robert Blackwell (ancestry unknown) b.1610 Eng; died 1664 York VA. came to Virginia about 1635. In 1645, in Bruton Parish, York Co., Virginia, he married Ursula Unity Croshaw (1630 ? - after 1657 VA).

The website referred to as Blackwell Generation under Sources does not exist.

Please correct the URL or remove it. Thanks.

Robin, I tried to complete this merge but it would only let me go so far. Not sure what needs to happen now. If you do, please let me know. Otherwise, I'm back to working on Lydia Turner.
Blackwell-2071 and Blackwell-446 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, death and parents, (merges proposed)

For anyone working this family line or the Ussery Family line. There were many duplicates added and in merging those duplicates, there were some incorrect merges done that combined generations. This will take a while to straighten out.

The youngest daughter Sarah was removed as she is not listed on the sources found. Also, the dates did not work for her to actually be the daughter Sarah, born in 1674.

The "son" Joseph was removed, he was actually the same birth as James' brother, Joseph. Merge of the two profiles was proposed.

Please review your sources, there are children attached that were born outside the child bearing years of this person. Thanks for helping to improve Wikitree
