Biography

Magdalene Blair, born in March 1725 probably at Blair in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, was a daughter of William Blair, Esq., and Catharine Tait. Magdalene was baptised in the parish of Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, on 24 March 1725[1] She is listed among the children of William and Catherine in Robert Douglas' and James Paterson's accounts of the Blairs of that Ilk.[2]

Douglas and Paterson record that Magdalene married Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, Bart., [3] and had three sons and three daughters. Her husband was the 3rd Baronet, son of Sir Alexander Maxwell of Monreith, 2nd Bart., and Lady Jean Montgomerie. She died on 28 Jan. 1765.

Her marriage took place around circa 1746, after which she was Lady Maxwell (though, as with all Scottish women, she retained her maiden name of Blair).

The children of Magdalen Blair and Sir William were:

  1. Catharine Maxwell, married John Fordyce of Ayton, Esq., in Berwickshire.
  2. Jane Maxwell, b. 1748, d. 14 April 1812, married Alexander, Duke of Gordon.
  3. Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 4th. Bart., b. c.1751, d. 17 Feb. 1812.
  4. Eglintoun Maxwell b. c.1754, d. 28 March 1803, married Sir Thomas Wallace Dunlop, Bart.
  5. Hamilton Maxwell
  6. Dunbar Maxwell

Blair-10021 and Blair-1742 appear to represent the same person because: I mistakenly created a duplicate profile for Magdalene Blair, Lady Maxwell, wife of Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, Bt. My profile needs to be merged away.
