Biography

William Blair was born on July 24, 1737, in Kettins, Angus, Scotland. He married a woman named Mary (last name unknown) in 1748 in Scotland. They had at least one child during their marriage. He died on May 10, 1826, in Ohio having lived a long life of 88 years.

Unsourced Family Story

William and his wife Mary were both from Scotland. They were in America by at least 1774. William Sr. was an Indian fighter. He served under Captain John Lewis and Colonel Andrew Lewis in the service of Virginia in Lord Dunmore's War. This service predates the American Revolution. He was wounded 10 Oct 1774 at the Battle of Point Pleasant. He is found in Harrison and Randolph Co., Va records and owned land in Randolph Co., Va before moving to Kentucky.

By 1796 William is found living at Bush Creek in Montgomery Co., Ky. From there he moved to Madison Co, Ohio. There are several court records in Madison Co, Ohio starting in 1810, including a document on 1 Jan 1816 in which he appoints an attorney to sell his 300 acres along the Tygerts Ridge Valley in Randolph Co, VA.

As far as is known no will or other document has been found to verify the names of all of William and Mary Blair's children. on the marriage certificate for Margaret Blair, William and Mary Blair gave permission for their daughter Margaret to marry Isaac McHenry. The McHenrys, Alexander Blair and Peter Breeding owned land together in what is now Adair County, KY as early as1791.

In 1806 Isaac McHenry moved to Madison Co., Ohio, leaving his daughter in the care of Johnathon Hurst and his wife Sally (Blair) Hurst, daughter of Alexander Blair. It seems likely that Alexander Blair who married Elizabeth Breeding in Harrison Co., VA was Margaret's brother.

The younger William Blair, who married Margaret McCullough in the same county in 1791, is probably also a brother. He is referred to as William Jr. in various court records, with no other William mentioned, other than this William. The 1801 Montgomery Co., KY tax lists include four Blairs listed together, John, Jesse, William, and James. Both Jesse and James are found later in Madison Co., Ohio land records. It seems likely that Jesse is also a son of William Blair." Source: David Dollard
