Baroness Catherine Blair, Lady Maxwell, born perhaps circa 1740 in Adamtoun, Monkton Parish, Ayrshire, was the daughter and heiress of David Blair, 11th of Adamton, and his second wife Anne Blair (who was in turn daughter of William Blair, Esq., and his second wife Catherine Tait, ancestors of the later Blairs of Blair). Catherine's father David was the last heir male of the Ancient Blairs of Adamtoun, oldest cadet of the Ancient Blairs of that Ilk.
Baroness Catherine married in 1776 Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, 4th Bart. Their children were:
In his history of Ayrshire, James Paterson supplies the following account of Baroness Catherine and her family:
"Catherine Blair of Adamtoun. She married, in 1776, her cousin, Sir William Maxwell of Monreith, Bart., by whom she had three sons and six daughters. She sold Adamtoun, in Nov. 1783, to the late Robert Reid, Esq., and died 2d April 1798. . . ."
