Biography

JOHN WAS THE ONLY BOY OF SEVEN KIDS. WITH SIX SISTERS, HE GOT LITTLE PRIVACY AND COULDN'T WAIT TO TRY HIS WINGS. HE LEFT HOME ON HIS 18th BIRTHDAY. HE FOUND WORK WITH A BLACKSMITH AT FIRST IN GREENBRIER CO. AND LATER HE HIRED ON AS LABORER FOR JOHN SMITH BAISDEN WHOM HAD BUILT A GRIST MILL TO GRIND UP THE SORGUM TO PRODUCE MOLASSES. MR. BAISDEN WAS A REVOLUTIONARY WAR VET. HIS OLDEST DAUGHTER WAS POLLY. JACKIE COURTED HER AND POPPED THE QUESTION, SHE ACCEPTED AND THEY ELOPED TO PIKESVILLE PIKE CO., KY AND MARRIED IN 1828. MR. BAISDEN RECIEVED HIS WAR BOUNTY OF 120 ACERS ON THE MOUTH OF THE LAUREL CREEK AND GAVE JACKIE AND POLLY THE 40ACER SORGUM FARM AS A WEDDING DOWERY, PACKED UP HIS FAMILY AND MOVED TO THE NEW PLACE IN LOGAN CO., WV[1]

mr. baisden became too old to manage his farm and asked jack and polly to come and manage it. jack sold his 40acer grist mill and moved his family to logan county. jack died in 1860 in lenor, west virginia.
