Biography

Sarah Matilda Blair was born on September 3, 1868 in Magheraboy, County Antrim, Ireland, to Archibald Blair and Elizabeth (Cunningham) Blair. Mary Jane Blair of Magheraboy was present at her birth and filed the birth record.[1]. Sarah was baptized on December 18, 1868 at Finvoy Presbyterian Church in Finvoy, Ireland.[2]

Sarah married John Wilson on August 25, 1897 at First Presbyterian Church in Ballymoney, Ireland. John and Sarah were both living in Drumlee, where John worked as a laborer. The couple was married by Samuel Wallace, with witnesses Samuel Wilson (John's brother) and Maggie Stinson.[3] John was 41 years old and Sarah was 28, marrying quite a bit later in life than was the custom at the time.

John and Sarah stayed in the Ballymoney area for about three years before migrating to Greenock, Scotland in 1900 or 1901. They had six children:

  • Elizabeth, born 28 Aug 1898 in Drumlee, Co. Antrim, Ireland
  • James, born 20 Nov 1899 in Dirraw, Ireland
  • Nancy, born 5 Aug 1901 in Greenock, Scotland
  • John, born 22 Jun 1903 in Greenock
  • Sarah, born 29 Jan 1905 in Greenock
  • Samuel, born 28 Aug 1907 in Greenock

The family attended the Martyrs Congregational Church in Greenock, Scotland for many years.[4]

On April 11, 1925, John (age 67), Sarah (55), daughter Sarah (20) and son Samuel Blair (17), departed Glasgow on the SS Cameronia, arriving in New York nine days later on April 20. They had $200 in cash with them and were heading to their son John's home at 6640 Ross Street in Germantown, Pennsylvania. John's occupation at this time was laborer, while Sarah was listed as a housewife, daughter Sarah as a sugar worker, and son Samuel as a butcher.[5]

John and Sarah, along with their children James (28), John (25) and Sarah (21), lived at 107 E Hortter St on Apr 9, 1930. Their rent was $40/month.[6]

Husband John died at age 77 on December 7, 1933 from head injuries due to a fall in the home.[7]

Sarah died three years later at age 68 on April 25, 1937 at her residence at 83 E. Hortter Street in Philadelphia, of chronic myocarditis.[8]

Sarah was buried on April 29, 1937, alongside John at Chelten Hills Cemetery in Philadelphia.[8]
