Biography

Hannah Blair was born about 1743. She was the daughter of Rev Samuel Blair of Londonderry Township, Chester Co, Pennsylvania, and his wife, Frances van Hook, the daughter of Lawrence van Hook of New Jersey.[1]

Hannah was the sister of:

  1. Joseph Francis Blair Sr . b.1735 Big Samson Swamp ,Wayne Co., PA
  2. Rev Samuel Blair, DD, born 1741 at Chester County, Pennsylvania, died at Germantown on 23 September 1818, chaplain to the House of Representatives 1790-2, married at Abington, Connecticut, on 24 September 1769, Susanna Shippen, the daughter of William Shippen and his wife, Susannah Harrison;[2] [1]
  3. Frances Moore;[1]
  4. Martha Edmiston;[1]
  5. Susannah Sanderson;[1]
  6. William Lawrence Blair;[1]

Hannah married William Foster and they had eight children which included:

  1. Alexander William Foster, who married Jane Heron;[3]
  2. James Blair Foster who married Mary Grier of Meadville in February 1829;[3]
  3. Mary van Hook Foster;[1] married William Dougherty;[3]
  4. Samuel Blair Foster married Miss Elizabeth Donnell;[3]
  5. Margaret Foster married James R Rodgers;[3]
  6. Martha Blair Foster;[1]
  7. Hannah Susannah Foster;[1] Hannah Foster married Mr Stephenson;[3]
  8. Susan Foster married Mr Clark;[3]
  9. Elizabeth Foster;[1]

Hannah husband William Foster died 30 September, 1780, aged 40, and is buried in the Octoraro Churchyard.[3] Hannah then raised their 8 children alone. Two of the oldest boys became prominent Lawyers in west Pennsylvania and two daughters married prominent war veterans, the other two boys farmed and cared for their mother until her death.

Hannah Foster died at her daughter's home in Pennsylvania in 1810, aged 65, having survived her husband William by 30 years.[3]
