Born Blairsville or Herrings Prairie (later named Herrin) in Williamson County, Illinois.
He worked first in sales but then got a job with the state, moving to Dixon, IL by 1920 to work at the state institution there. He worked on the farm there while Lela, his wife, worked as an attendant. They also appear to have worked as house parents.
