David had military service during the War of 1812. He married Sarah Job on 9 September 1819 at Fayette County, Ohio (Fayette was formed out of Ross County in 1810). They immigrated in 1819 to Flat Rock, Indiana with his parents and they moved on to Illinois. In May 1836, he and his wife moved Des Moines County, Iowa, having been a claim maker in the Northwest Territory. During claim days, he was an arbitrator and aided in enforcing claim laws in the region between the Flint River and the Iowa River. At the land sales in 1838, he was the bidder and as such, bought all settlers' claims sold at that time in Huron and Yellow Springs Townships. He erected the first frame house in 1840 in Yellow Springs Township.
