It appears that he was of full age when he succeeded his father, which would place his birth prior to 18 Jul 1455 but he was certainly of full age by 19 Jan 1477/78 placing his birth before 19 Jan 1456/57.
Red Book of Scotland claims that John died in 1505/6[4] and not at Flodden. It can be seen that he is not included in the list of dead found in the work on the subject by Fitzwilliam Elliot[6] but Peter Murray of Markham, Ontario, in his account of the Ancient Blairs of that Ilk (version dated 12 March 1999), affirms of this John Blair of that Ilk that he "was slain at the battle of Flodden in 1513 leaving apparently at least two sons and two (sic) daughters." Although his account says "two" daughters, he actually lists the three known daughters: Egidia, Elizabeth, and Margaret [The first two who seem more probably were his sisters not daughters].
Douglas conflates serveral generations of John Blair and must be treated with care.[7]
As for John Blair's "two" sons, besides John's heir John, Peter Murray also lists a son named James Blair of Mydil Achyndrane (later known as Blairstoun). Peter Murray's accounting of this family is derived from and mostly based on Paterson's History of Ayrshire, Vol. 2, pp.358-361, where Paterson relates the genealogical history of the Blairs of Middle Auchindraine/Blairstoun. Paterson begins his account with "John Blare, who together with his spouse, Beatrix Mortoun, had a charter of the lands of Mydil Achyndrane from James IV., 10th March 1500. He had 'conqueste' the lands from 'Jacobo Schaw de Salquhy.' He was slain at Flodden." Paterson cites an "Instrument of Sasine in the Auchindraine charter chest" for the charter of 10 March 1500.
Paterson himself supposed that the Blairs of Middle Auchindrane were a branch of the Blairs of that Ilk, but he did not know how they connected. The connection is that John Blair, 1st of Middle Auchindrane, was John Blair of that Ilk. He granted half of the lands of Middle Auchindrane to his son and heir John, and the other half to his younger son James. Paterson thought that James was succeeded in Middle Auchindrane by his brother John, but Peter Murrray said that it appears rather that James' successor John was his son. That John Blair, 3rd of Middle Auchindrane (whose wife was Mareoun Kennedy), obtained both halves of Middle Auchindrain in or by 1548 -- he and Mareoun had two sons, James, 4th of Middle Auchindraine, and John, who in 1586 obtained property in the Burgh of Ayr from his older brother James. James, 4th of Middle Auchindraine, was succeeded by his son James, ancestor of the Blairs of Blairstoun in the Parish of Maybole, which family Paterson brings down to 1698.
