David was the fourth child of Alexander Blair and Cecilia McLeish his wife although her was the third surviving at thet time. He was born at Gateside Tollhouse when his father was tollkeeper there.[1] His middle name came fro his mother's uncle David Smart who lived in Balmerino as shoemaker and Army Pensioner who had fought in the Peninsular Campaign in 1815.
David started school in Forfar when his father was tollkeeper there. When his father took up the family croft at Southfield ,Dumbarrow in 1870's David would have attended school in Letham.
On leaving home in the 1880's he moved to Arbroath and worked in a flax mill as a mechanic. He lived at 2 Jamieson St., Arbroath and married there in 1889 aged 21 to Jane Milne Clark.[2]. By 1894 they lived at 38 Kinnaird Street and by 1898 they lived at 93 Dishland Street, Arbroath.[3]
David became mill-manager and lived at Ardoch, Keptie St., Arbroath by 1915. He was Congregational Treasure in the High Street United Free Church of Scotland.
His wife Jane predeceased him. After he retired he continued to live in Ardoch in Keptie St., and died there of a stroke aged 53.[4] He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Arbroath.
