Research Note

There is no evidence to support a parental relationship from Andrew Lynn of that Ilk and Ann (Blair) Lynn to any children at all. Registers for the parish in which the couple lived - Dalry Parish, Ayrshire - prior to the 1680s all were lost centuries ago.[1] Thus, there are no baptismal records, and no marriage records, for anyone in the Ayrshire Lynn family. The only reason there is a marriage record for Andrew and Ann is that Andrew inherited the family's Ayrshire property, and the 1643 deed refers to Ann Blair as his spouse.[2] There is no deed from Andrew and/or Ann to any heirs, while one of Andrew's Ayrshire properties passed to a Blair, presumably a relative of Ann.

Biography

Ann Blair was the daughter of Gavin Blair of Auldmuir, which is in Ayrshire approximately four miles west of Blair and two miles west of the old barony of Lynn. Blair was held by Gavin's elder brother, Bryce Blair of that Ilk. The title "of that Ilk" usually indicated holding of a property bearing the same name as the family and was used only by the chief of the family, his wife, and his heir. Gavin was in Auldmuir as early as 1622 and likely 1612. Ann Blair and Andrew Lynn of that Ilk were married about 1643, Andrew vesting his spouse, Ann Blair, daughter of Gavin Blair of Auldmuir, in certain of his Ayrshire properties. According to the Scottish government's published index to the register of sasines [deeds] for Ayrshire, Ann Blair appears again as Andrew's spouse in deeds dated 1656 and 1657. The latter year is the last mention of Ann while Andrew appears again in a 1659 deed for the same property. Thus, Ann likely died sometime between 1657 and 1659. Unfortunately, there is some confusion between Gavin Blair of Auldmuir and Gavin Blair of Hallie or Hally; the father of Ann Blair is Gavin Blair of Auldmuir. Lynn-944 11:58, 30 July 2015 (EDT)
