Biography

Joseph Blair, born 1727 in Worcester, MA; died February 08, 1801 in Worcester, MA. He was the son of Robert Blair and Isabella Rankin. He married Mary April 11, 1780 in Worcester, MA. .Mary, born Abt. 1731; died March 1810 in Amherst, MA.

The youngest of 11 children, he received his father's homestead December 14, 1751 (23 years before his father's death--deeded provisioned on lifelong care). He, in turn, bequeathed the farm to his son Increase with similar provisions. The farm was located on what is now Pleasant Street in a section known as Lenox and Richmond Heights. He was elected a Warden of Worcester on March 6, 1769. When the threat of war came in 1774, he sided with the Loyalists and signed the Protest of 1774. He remained in town when the war erupted and was one of 27 persons listed as "Enemies to this and the Other United States of America." He remained quietly at home and withdrew from all political activity throughout the war. He sent 20-year old son Robert to live with relatives west of the Connecticut River to keep him from being drafted. Robert, however, volunteered his assistance to the French allies of the Colonists and marched to Yorktown, VA where Cornwallis was trapped. Robert returned to his farm in Rutland after the war and received a Captain's commission from Gov. Samuel Adams, but was forced to return to Worcester at the untimely death of his brother Increase. Increase's widow (Huldah) sold the farm back to Robert so that he could care for his elderly father Joseph, who was then about 72. He died about 2 years after Robert's return.
