John was born on 26th September 1822 in Liverpool [1], and married Harriot Dobb in 1843 [2]. They had 5 children together [3].
He worked as a master baker and confectioner, in which occupation he was helped by his son Edgar and daughter Minnie [4].
He had a life-long affiliation with the Methodist Church, working at various times as a class leader, steward, local preacher, trustee, Sunday school teacher and super-intendant (a post he held for 50 years). He was local preachers' secretary for 62 years (which may be a record) from 2nd April 1844. In his earlier days as a local preacher, he often walked thirty miles on Mondays and conducted three services before work[5].
Harriot died in 1882 at the age of 57 [6], and he continued as a widow until 1906, when he died at the age of 85[7].
