Little Compton

On July 22, 1673, 29 men proved their shares in the grant of land at Seaconet; these 29 were the original proprietors of Little Compton. Of these original 29, who all lived in or near Duxbury, New Plymouth Colony, "probably not five of their number had ever seen their goodly lands by the sea".

In 1685, when the division was made of Plymouth Colony, Bristol County had the towns of Taunton, Rehoboth, Dartmouth, Swansea, Bristol, Tiverton, Little Compton, Freetown, and the plantations of Cumberland Gore and Attleboro. Little Compton's name and land area was unchanged.

By 1746, Little Compton, Bristol County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Colony of Great Britain secured its own royal decree, and was annexed to Newport County as a part of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, along with Tiverton and Bristol.

Because Little Compton was once part of the Plymouth Colony, all probate and land records prior to 1746 can be found in Taunton and New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts.Wilbur-403 20:51, 8 May 2019 (UTC)
