Biography

Sarah Ann Blake was born in Portaferry, Ireland and relocated to Greenock, Scotland with her family c1873. Like her sisters Caroline and Cordelia, Sarah was self-employed as a dressmaker. She married Niven Brown in Greenock in 1885. Niven was the son of a well-established baker in Greenock and he and Sarah Ann relocated to Ayr, Ayrshire Scotland by 1911, where they set up their own bakery: Niven Brown Family Baker and Purveyor. Sarah and Niven lived for the rest of their lives in Ayr, where they raised five children: Archibald Edward Blake Brown, John Brown, Caroline Blake Brown, Elizabeth Brown (McLay), and Niven Brown. Sarah and Niven are buried in the Ayr Cemetery.

On the 22nd of September 1885 at 24 Trafalgar Street, Greenock, Scotland, after publication according to the forms of the Christina Bretheren, George Adam, minister among Chritstian Bretheren wed: Niven Brown, baker (Master), bachelor, 28 years of age, 67 Nelson Street, Greenock, son of Archibald Brown, baker and Mrs Margaret Brown nee McLay, deceased; to Sarah Ann Blake, spinster, 25 years of age, 24 Trafalgar Street, Greenock, daughter of Edward Blake Customs House Officer and Elizabeth Blake nee Gauntlett, deceased; witnesses Andrew Russell and Cordelia Blake. [2]Note: John Brown, Niven's uncle, was a prominent member of the Christian Brethren group in Greenock.

Residence 1881 CENSUS: Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire, Scotland; Arthur Blake household: Arthur is living with his sisters at 24 Trafalgar Street, Greenock. Sarah is 20 years of age (b c1861), born Ireland, and is a dressmaker. (Note: family is living next door to older brother William Henry Blake, his wife and family at 26 Trafalgar Street). [4]

1891 CENSUS Niven Brown who married in 1885 is recorded at 25 Newton Street, Greenock.[5]

1901 CENSUS Niven Brown at 4 Finnart Road, Greenock.[6]

1911 CENSUS: 43 Prestwick Road, Ayr, Scotland. Niven Brown: occupation: baker, b 1856; wife Sarah Ann b c1861, Portaferry, Ireland; children: Archibald Edward Blake Brown b 1886, Greenock, baker; John Brown b 1889, baker, Greenock; Caroline Blake Brown b 1890, Greenock; Elizabeth (Bessie) McLay Brown b 1891 Greenock; baker's shop assistant; Niven Brown jnr b 1894 Greenock, baker.
