Dr. William G. Blake was born in Virginia (See Research Notes) in 1800. At the age of 5 years he was taken to Tennessee by his father, Thomas Blake, who was a farmer and millwright by occupation. William G. Blake remained in Roane County, Tennessee until 1837, when he came to Missouri, and located in Dade County, at the town of Cora, coming in 1844 to Stockton. At Stockton, he entered forty acres of land where the town is now located. He later deeded the land to the county for the county seat. Dr. Blake practised his profession in Cedar County for many years, and became well known through out the county, both professionally and socially. During the Civil War, Dr. Blake removed to Texas, where he remained until the war was over. He then returned to Stockton where he lived the remainder of his life. !Clayton, Abbot, Historical Sketches of Cedar County, Missouri (Greenfield, Missouri, 1967), p. 110. !History of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade and Benton Counties, Missouri (Chicago: Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889), p. 20. !Emma Middleton Wells, History of Roane County, Tennessee, Vol 1; Chattanooga, Tn., Lookout Publishing Co., 1927, pp. 139-140.
