Biography

This profile is part of the Blake Name Study.

Moses Blake was born about 1683 in Hampton, New Hampshire. His approximate birth year is calculated from his reported age of 69 on the date of his death, which occurred on May 4, 1752. Moses was the son of Timothy Sr. and Naomi (Sleeper) Blake.

Moses married Abigail Smith on December 25, 1701. They had at least the following eight (8) children: Hezekiah; Hannah (m. Edward Lock); Moses [Jr.]; Abigail (m. Tristram Sanborn); Jonathan; Mary (m. Francis Batchelder); Mariah b. 1718 (m. Theophilus Batchelder, brother to Francis); and Timothy b. Nov. 18, 1720.

Moses passed away on May 4, 1752 in Kensington, New Hampshire. He mentions his wife and seven (7) children (except for son Timothy) in his Will, which was executed on February 17, 1746/7 "in the Parish of Kensington in Hampton County in the Province of New Hampshire..."

Moses named the following in the order by which they appear in his Will: wife Abigail, grandson Josiah, son Hezekiah (father of Josiah), Moses [Jr.], Jonathan, two "eldest daughters" Hannah (Lock) and Abigail (Sanborn); Mary (Batchelder) and Mariah (Batchelder). Moses also named his son Moses and his grandson Josiah as co-executors of his Will.

7) Edward (4) Locke. He was born June 28, 1701 and married, December 17, 1721, Hannah (4) Blake, daughter of Moses (3) and Abigail (3) (Smith) Blake; and lived in Kensington. Their children were Lydia, born in 1725, Abigail, born in 1730; Moses, born in 1732; Timothy, born in 1735; Lydia, born in 1738; Abigail , born in 1741; Edward, born in 1744, and Hannah (5) (Wentworth - p. 50)
8) Moses's (subject of this profile) first wife was Mary Blake, dau. Moses and Abigial (Smith) of Kensington, whom he married Jan 20, 1732, at Hampton Falls. She was b. Sep 7, 1712, and was living in 1745, and probably until after birth of all the children given below. C. H. Batchelder - pp. 24-25.
