Robert Blakeney

Major Robert Blakeney was the son of William Blakeney and Elizabeth Bowerman.

He gained the rank of Captain on 15 May 1716 in the Huntington Regiment of Foot.

He married Deborah Smyth, daughter of Grice Smyth and Gertrude Taylor, on 27 January 1729, with whom he had four children.

He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Limerick in 1730. He gained the rank of Brigade Major in 1743 in the General Hulse during the German War. He fought in the Battle of Dettingen.

He lived at Mount Blakeney, Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland and at 36 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.

William Blakeney of Mount Blakeney and Thomastown married Elizabeth Bowerman of Cooliney, county Cork and their eldest son was created 1st [and only] Baron Blakeney in 1756. The Baron’s younger brother Robert Blakeney married Deborah daughter of Grice Smyth of Ballynatray, county Waterford in 1729.

Although Robert had a number of sons it was the descendants of his daughter Gertrude who succeeded to the Mount Blakeney estate. In 1752, she married her cousin Colonel Robert Blakeney of Abbert, county Galway and their daughter married Thomas Lyon of Watercastle, Queen’s County (Laois). Gertrude Blakeney Lyon married Robert Uniacke Fitzgerald of Corkbeg, county Cork and at the time of Griffith’s Valuation she is recorded as the immediate lessor of Mount Blakeney (562 acres) and Thomastown (952 acres).

Nov. 7, 1877, lived in New York City m. in Peekskill, New York in 1818 Lydia Amelia Ferris daughter of Joseph and Lydia (Seymour) Ferris. She died Dec. 3, 1873 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a Lieutenant in the Union Army during the Civil War. He had 9 Children. 5. Annie Post Blakeney b. Dec. 4, 1827 in Peekskill, New York. d. in St. Louis, Mo. in 1911 (Her death cert. says 1912 ) m. in New York 1854 (the record from Kings Co. says: 1855) Doctor Joseph Flavius Adams and resided in Brooklyn and New York City, N.Y. He died Apr. 23, 1861 buried in Greenwood Cemetary, Brooklyn, she then resided with her only child in Washington, D.C. where she had a position drafting in the Supervising Architects Office, while her son attended Georgetown University Medical School. After 20 years residence in Washington she went with her son to St. Louis, Mo. where she is buried near her son. (she's buried in Oakdale a suburb of St. Louis according to her death rec.) The father of Dr. Jos. F. Adams was born in England and was also a Doctor of Medicine. 6. Arthur Wellington Adams, M.D. born June 21, 1856 in Brooklyn, N.Y. was graduated from Georgetown Medical School, Wash., D.C. in 1878. He settled in St. Louis, Mo. in 1883 and married there Mar. 5, 1884 Suzanne Slayback daughter of Col. Alonzo Wm. Slayback. 7. Marie Dupuy Adams born St. Louis, Mo. U.S.A. m. St. Louis. Mo. Lord William Blakeney brother of the first Blakeney in America distinguished himself as the defender of Sterling Castle in Scotland against Prince Charles Edw. the pretender in 1745. Lord Blakeney had 3 brothers Charles, John, and Robert. John went to America. Robert died in England. Lord Blakeney was unmarried and left his estate to his brother Robert. Thomas Blakeney son of the first Blakeney in America bought land on the South side of Manhattan Island from the Battery up to the site of Trinity Church and also in Vandam St. His brother John went to South Carolina to live where he had a family. Elizabeth, the senior branch being now represented by John Blakeney, Esq., of Abbert, Co. Galway. A younger brother of the ancestor of the Abbert family. William Blakeney, of Mount Blakeney, near Kilmallock, was father of two sons, William and George. The younger was a colonel in the army; the elder, William Blakeney, Esq., of Thomastown, Co. Limerick, was father of four sons, William, Charles, John and Robert, of whom the eldest, Sir William Blakeney, K.B., colonel of the 27th foot, and lieutenant-general in the army, distinguished by his defence of Stirling Castle in 1746, and Fort St. Philips in 1756, was raised to the peerage of Ireland as Baron Blakeney in the latter year. His lordship was for some time governor of Minorca. He d. s.p., 20 September, 1761, aged ninety-one, and was interred with great funeral pomp in Westminster Abbey. With him the title became Extinct.

Waterford, and had issue, 1- William Blakeney, Esq., of Mount Blakeney who m. Gertrude, dau. of Richard Smyth, Esq., of Ballynatray, and was father of Rev. Robert Blakeney, of Great Eaton, co. Somerset, who d. s.p. 1824; 2- Grice Blakeney, lieutenant-general in the army, d. unm.; 1- Gertrude, m. Robert Blakeney, Esq., of Abbert; and 2- Jane, m. Robert Uniacke Fitzgerald, Esq., of Corkbegg, co. Cork, and was mother of Gertrude, wife of John La Touche, Esq., of Harristown, co. Kildare. Blakeney-38 and Blakeney-111 appear to represent the same person because: We were a little off here - better to restore/preserve John W. Blakeney's (key figure) parentage. There is good info in both profiles to preserve.
