Biography

Maude Blanchard West was born March 21, 1875, at Cotesfield, Nebraska to Thomas Blanchard and Laura Rawalt Blanchard, pioneer Nebraskans. The parents settled there before the village of Cotesfield was established. The father had to travel to Grand Island to obtain supplies. At that time soldiers at Ft. Hartsuff were in charge of order.

She attended Scotia College and Western Normal at Lincoln. She commenced teaching at a rural school when 16 years old, and continued until her marriage to Justin West on March 15, 1889. They resided at Cotesfield until 1917, when they moved to Grand Island. Mr. West died July 11 1927.

Her obituary states that she died Thursday, September 15, 1955, at a hospital in Grand Island following a month's illness. She had lost her sight several years prior. She had suffered a stroke a month before her death which became acute three weeks later necessitating hospitalization. She was a sister to Horace Blanchard, who along with her son, Hilary, of Alhambra, Cal, were with her when death came. Her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Mickel, North Carolina, arrived Friday.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Walter G. West, who died in 1953. Surviving are two children Hilary B. West, Alhambra, Calif., and Mrs. George Mickel, Charlottesville, N. C.; a brother, Horace, St. Paul; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was a member of Church of Latter Day Saints. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon in the Gedes Funeral Home. Elder Norman T. Hayman of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiated. Burial was in the Cotesfield cemetery.
