Biography

This profile is part of the Blanchard Name Study.

Joseph Richard is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana Plaque 5 Right. Listed with him is Anne Catherine Blanchard, three children: Marie, Rosalie & Anne Marie, and a nephew, Joseph Richard.[1]

Anne Blanchard was born 29 December 1725 in Port-Royal. She was the daughter of Antoine Blanchard and Élisabeth Terriot. She was baptized the same day by Pierre Tibaudeau and ceremonies took place 6 April 1726 at Port Royal. Her godparents were Jean Dupuy, son of Jean Dupuy and Marie Magdelaine Blanchard, daughter of Antoine Blanchard.[2][3]

She married Joseph Richard, son of the late Pierre RIchard and Magdelaine Girouard 20 January 1744 at Port Royal. Witnesses were René Richard, Louis Girouard, Joseph Dupuis and Joseph Savoy. There was a dispensation for 3-3 & 3-4 consanguinity.[4]

Known children:
  1. Marguerite RICHARD (c.1744-1819)
  2. Madeleine RICHARD (c.1748-1766)
  3. Marie Anastasie RICHARD (c.1759-1786)
  4. Rosalie RICHARD (1763-1769)
  5. Anne Marie RICHARD (1765-1769)
  6. Pelagie RICHARD (c.1768-1815)

At the time of the Great Upheaval she was apparently among the prisoners at Fort Beauséjour, Nova Scotia, and released upon the signing of the 1763 Treaty of Paris.[5] She apparently came to Louisiana with the Beausoleil party via Santo Domingo in 1765. She was counted on the census of 9 April 1766 in Cabahannocer (now St. James), Louisiana.[6][7]

Census: 1769 Cabahannocer, St. James, LA [8]
Census: 1 Aug 1770 , Ascension, LA [9]
Census: 23 Apr 1777 Donaldsonville, Ascension, LA [10]

She married again to Jean Baptiste CORMIER 10 Jan 1779 in St. Martinville, Louisiana. [11]

She died soon after, at age about 75, on 30 December 1800 and was buried 31 December 1800 in St. Martinville, Louisiana.[12] There was an inventory of property of Jean Baptiste CORMIER & Anne BLANCHARD. [13]

Research

NOTE: Anne was baptized with the name Anne Blanchard and only the Wall of Names adds Catherine. There is a Catherine Blanchard (bef.1750-1777) on the Wall of Names listed alone. The Wall of Names website says she is the one who sponsored a child born to Charles Prejean and Marguerite Richard in 1765. Other than that baptismal record, nothing has been found that sheds light on who that Catherine Blanchard might be. Are they the same woman?[14]Charles and Marguerite are living in the house next to Joseph Richard and his wife Anne Blanchard [this woman]. Is she the one who sponsored the child? Did she use Catherine? Are they the same person?
