Biography

This profile is part of the Blanchard Name Study.

Richard Blanchard was admitted to the Providence Plantations in 1697. [1]in a report of a town meeting, April 8, 1697 we read: "Whereas there is a stranger, one Richard Blanshard and his wife, being distressed by ye Indian warrs at ye Eastward, and there put out of a way for a lively hood, are come into our towne desireing of ye towne admittance, that in this towne he and his wife may have liberty to abide". They abode, and five months later their son, John was born, 9-19-1697. His birth is recorded in Warwick.

In Records of Wills, Bk. 1, p. 177, at Apponaug is to be found an inventory of Richard's property taken on 18 January 1720/21.[2] In the inventory heading it records his death, "December ye 7th Last Past".[2] It shows he was a weaver. His widow Mary gave oath that she showed them everything.

There were other records of land deals of Richard and Mary, his wife. Richard was a weaver. It is believed that he and his wife, Mary were Huguenots who had left France to avoid religious persecution. [3]

From the date of his appearance in April 1697, He may have possibly come from Oxford, MA, which was a Huguenot settlement that was attacked shortly before he arrived in Providence.[4]

Note

Please use caution when reviewing Blanchards of Rhode Island. While their research is solid for the descendants of William Blanchard, I have found errors in their assumptions. Further research is needed when you see the words, "probably" or "most likely", etc.
