Marie Blanchard was born about 1656 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Jean Blanchard (abt. 1611–abt. 1686) and Radegonde Lambert (abt. 1621–aft. 1686). She was the sixth and last child.

Marie was listed in the first census of Port-Royal in 1671 at the age of 15, unmarried, and living with her parents and siblings.[1]

Four years later, Marie (18) married Pierre Gaudet (20) (born about 1654 in Port-Royal; son of Denis Gaudet and Martine Gauthier) in 1675 in Acadie.[2] Their known children were:

  1. Pierre Gaudet (abt. 1676– ) .
  2. Antoine Gaudet (abt. 1678–bef. 1740) .
  3. Germain Gaudet (abt. 1680– ) .
  4. Guillaume Gaudet (1683–aft. 1735) .
  5. Denis Gaudet (1685–bef. 1731) .
  6. Marguerite Gaudet (abt. 1688–1739) .
  7. Jean Gaudet (1690–1757) .
  8. Bernard Gaudet (abt. 1692–bef. 1747) .
  9. Marie Gaudet (abt. 1694– ) .
  10. Jeanne Gaudet (abt. 1698– )

In 1678, Pierre and Marie were enumerated in the Port-Royal census with their two sons. Marie's parents lived next door. [3]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marie BLANCHARD, aged 30, was living with her husband, Pierre GODET [sic], the younger (le Jeune), aged 32, and their five children: Pierre, aged 10, Antoine, aged 7, Germain, aged 5, Guillaume, aged 3 and Denis, aged 2 months. They owned 2 guns and were living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle, 18 sheep and 10 hogs.[4]

The family remained in Port-Royal and seemed to be doing well, as shown in the censuses in 1693[5], 1698[6], 1700[7], 1701[8], 1703[9], 1707[10] and 1714[11]. Their land holdings and number of farm animals increased with time, and were quite significant in 1698 with 25 head of cattle, 35 sheep, 15 hogs, 26 arpents of cultivable land, 12 fruit trees, and 2 guns.

Marie died after the census of 1714.

Research Notes

Marie and her sister Anne Blanchard married brothers. Her sister Anne married the older Pierre (l'aîné), while Marie married the younger Pierre (le jeune).

According to Stephen White's Dictionnaire, p. 673, who had access to the original census records:
  • In the 1693 census, the Tim Hébert transcription lists 29 arpents of land. There were 25.
  • In the 1798 census, the Tim Hébert transcription lists 72 fruit trees. There were 12.
  • In the 1701 census, 5 children were omitted, and the others were all incorrectly named.
  • In the 1707 census, certain children were omitted.
