Research notes

Dorothy's parents are sometimes listed as James Morley and Mary (Unknown) Morely; see several (unsourced) online trees[6][7], however, her maiden name was Blanchard, not Morely. According to data from their headstones, Mary Morely was only 12 years Dorothy's senior --- probably too young to be Dorothy's mother. And the marriage record of Dorothy Blanchard to Isaac Hogarth says that she was the daughter-in-law to James and Mary Morley.

According to Hubert Stone.

I found a Richard Blanchard in Bay-De-Verde Newfoundland... I ....found a family that seems to match. Her possible parents are Richard Blanchard buried Oct 30 1757 in Wimborne Minster and Dorothy Scrivener born August 1, 1705 in Poole, and buried Dec 18, 1757 in Wimborne Minster. Richard and Dorothy were married Jan 9, 1727 and had the following children:
  1. Wiliam 1728
  2. Elizabeth 1730
  3. Charles 1732
  4. Mary 1736
  5. Richard 1739
  6. Dorothy 1744
  7. Thomas 1746-1747
Dorothy Scrivener, possible mother of Dorothy Blanchard, is the daughter of John Scrivener 1673- and Elizabeth 1680-. This John Scrivener has a twin sister Katherin. Mary Morley had twins, they say twins run in families. John Scrivener is the son of John Scrivener born abt. 1648 and buried June 29, 1710 in Poole and Dorothy born circa 1648. Children of John and Dorothy Scrivener are:
  1. John 1673
  2. Katherin 1673-1673
  3. Thomas 1676
  4. William 1678-1722
  5. Margarett 1681
  6. Richard 1684
The names Richard and Dorothy have been carried down the family to Dorothy Blanchard and Richard Blanchard planter of Bay de Verde. I also found John Scrivener, who worked for Poole merchants, buried Oct 13,1774 in Trinity. Dorothy Blanchard married Isaac Hogarth in Trinity May 16, 1775.
I say that Dorothy, Mary, Richard, and possibly other siblings came to the area in the 1760's after their parents died.[8]

Making sense of all this, it would seem that the John Scrivener, buried in Trinity, is possibly an uncle or cousin of the Trinity Blanchard's. Richard, Mary and Dorothy are all siblings thus Mary is not Dorothy's biological mother, but her sister who raised her after both of their parents died in 1757, when Mary was 21 and Dorothy 13 and I put it to you that the statement daughter in law to James and Mary Morley meant by law they were Dorothy's legal guardians and not that Mary was married to a Blanchard but a Blanchard herself. Richard probably went back and forth to Bay de Verde from Trinity to work on his fishing room until he was able to upgrade it to a plantation. I say that Dorothy, Mary, Richard, and possibly other siblings came to the area in the 1760's after their parents died.

I have further researched Dorothy Blanchard and I found a Richard Blanchard in Bay-De-Verde Newfoundland, and I figured he could possibly be a brother of Dorothy. From my earlier findings, I also assumed that Mary Morley was also a sibling to Dorothy and not her mother. Armed with this I went searching England and found a family that seems to match. Her possible parents are Richard Blanchard buried Oct 30 1757 in Wimborne Minster and Dorothy Scrivener born August 1, 1705 in Poole, and buried Dec 18, 1757 in Wimborne Minster. Isaac and Dorothy Hogarth's daughter, Mary Hogarth married Henry Stone Oct. 1, 1794 and they had the following children:

1. Grace 1795-1796 2. Grace 1797-1874 3. Thomas 1799- 4. Ambrose 1802-1880 5. Sarah 1804- 6. William 1807-1883 7. Tamson 1811- 8. Henry Dec. 31, 1913-Nov 27, 1888 9. Elizabeth 1816-

My connection to Dorothy Blanchard is through Henry and Mary (Hogarth) Stone via their 8th child Henry Stone who later became the first settler of Rocky Brook which today has been renamed Monroe, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

I am researching Dorothy Blanchard. I am not as sure that Mary Morly is her biological mother because Dorothy's burial record dated Oct. 13, 1829 says she was 82 at the time of her death which puts her birth at 1747. I have seen and taken a picture of Mary Morly's headstone and she died in 1787 at the age of 52 making her birth 1735, therefore, Mary would have only been 12 when Dorothy was born, and people claim that Mary was married to a Blanchard, but at 12? I think Mary is more likely an older sister or other relative that had taken her in after her parents had died, but, it's not impossible for a 12 year old to give birth, so, more research needs to be done. Dorothy's marriage to Isaac Hogarth says she is the daughter in law to James and Mary Morly. AND probably means both of them.
