Biography

Register Webb Bland was born on 1 March 1857 in Yuba City, California, to Adam Bland, a Methodist minister, and Ellen Kimberlin.[1][2][3] His father came to California in 1851, founded the first Methodist Church in Los Angeles, and for many years served as presiding elder for the church.

Register attended public schools in his father's various charges and, once prepared, entered the University of the Pacific in Santa Clara, California, where he graduated in 1878.[1][4][5][6][7] While attending the university, he met and married Flora Goodall of San Francisco, California, who was also a student at the university. In a series of meetings held at the university by the evangelist E. P. Hammond, he was converted and felt called to the ministry.[1]

His son Reginald was born in North Butte, California, in August 1878. In September 1879, he joined the Southern California Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church on probation, but was immediately transferred to the Columbia River Conference and stationed in Baker, Oregon for two years.[1][8][9][10]

In 1881, he moved to Evanston, Illinois, and entered Garrett Biblical Institute. While a student there he organized a church in Pullman, Illinois, and served as its pastor for two years from 1881 to 1883. He finished his theological course in the spring of 1884, while pastor of River Forest, where he remained one year from 1883 to 1884. In August 1884, he was transferred to the Rock River Conference and assigned to Willamette in the Chicago District.[1][11][12][13][14] His other charges were Wabash Ave in Chicago from 1885 to 1888,[1][15][16] Oak Park from 1888 to 1890,[1][17][18] Rogers Park from 1890 to 1895,[1][19][20] and Joliet from 1895 to 1896.[1] His daughter Florence was born in Wilmette in October 1884 and his daughter Serena was born in Oak Park in June 1889.[21]

During his last year in Illinois he suffered two hemmorrhages and had to take a break from his work. In 1896, he moved the family to Pasadena, California.[1][22] After a year of rest he started work again. In September 1897, he was transferred to the Southern California Conference and appointed to the Central Methodist Episcopal Church in San Diego.[1][23] He worked there for a year and a half before returning home to his family in Pasadena.[1] He died six weeks later of tuberculosis on 28 April 1899.[24][25] He was 42 years old. He was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery in Pasadena, California.[26]
