Biography

Isabella (Bland) Austin, of Colchester, England and Hampton was the daughter of John and Joanna Bland, of Edgartown, England.[1]

Isabella first married Francis Austin 2 Oct 1632.[2][3] They married at St. Mary The Virgin at the Walls, Colchester, England.[4]

Children of Francis and Isabella:[5][6]

  1. Isabella Asten / Austin, born circa 1633, died December 7, 1719, married Philip Towle
  2. Jemima Asten / Austin, baptized January 24, 1641, married John Knowles
  3. Keziah Asten/ Austin, also baptized January 24, 1641, married ______? Tucker

Francis was an early proprietor, in Hampton in 1741.[7]

Francis Asten or Austin had land in Hampton, New Hampshire, granted to him June 30, 1640. He died before July 13, 1642, when a grant was made to "the widow Asten."[6]

By 1644, Isabella was married for a second time to a Thomas Leavitt.[2]

A deposition was made at Hampton, New Hampshire, in 1671 stating that Isabella (Bland) Austin had formerly lived with her father, John, in Colchester, Essex. "How she met Francis Austin, who witnessed the will of Henry Chickering in Ringsfield, near Beccles, almost 50 miles to the north, we shall probably never know."[8]

Isabella died in 1699. In her Will, Isabel Levett does not leave sons Hezron, Aretas, or James anything — only her son John, along with her daughters. Hezron and Aretas testified against her daughter, Isabella, in her witch trial; this could possibly be the reason they were disinherited.[9]

Isabella Towle was persecuted for witchcraft. She and Rachel Fuller were accused in the summer of 1680 after the death of a child of John Godfrey. Rachel confessed and accused Isabella. both were committed to prison where they remained until the sitting of the Hampton Court, September 7, 1680. The court ordered that they continue in prison until bond be given for their good behavior of 100 pounds each. John Fuller became a bondsman for his wife, and Isaac Marston and John Redman for Isabella (it is likely that husband Philip was not able to raise the required bond). They were discharged at the Dover court in 1681. She was united with the church on July 2, 1699.[10]
